You are invited to the somatic revolution.

MODERN DANCE … began in the West with Isadora Duncan and in the East with Japanese Butoh and became a worldwide force for cultural change.

Both Isadora and Hijikata proposed a ‘new’ form of dance based on the restoration of ancient ancestral approaches. In this old way, dance was the connective tissue bridging inside to outside, dream to actuality, and human community to the cosmos. In this old way, dance is the oldest collective structure for celebration, grief, discovery, and love.

In training for this revolution, we have to heal from aspects of our Western enculturation that block our harmonious and sustainable participation in the lasting harmonies of the Earth and our own bodies. In this course we will be doing this healing.

Many blocks live in the somatic unconscious and can only be unearthed through a somatic process that brings consciousness gently into the unconscious. As we free our bodies of our nervous system triggers and our limiting attachment patterns, we become fluid expressions of our joyful participation with life.

As we learn to attune to the harmonies of life and Self, we find ourselves in a place of timeless depth and collaborative unfolding.

In this course you will experience the authentic teaching philosophy of Isadora and Butoh, which have been completely lost in what is now called contemporary or modern dance. This is not formulaic work and is not based on physical technique. It is art, a poetic possibility, operating through the souls of all present.

Laura Melling is an affiliate teacher and former company dancer with the Isadora Duncan International Institute. Her teacher was directly taught by Isadora’s daughters. She also trained and performed with Atsushi Takenouchi, who was a member of the original Hijikata butoh company. Laura began teaching and performing in 2003 and has extensive training in other fields, which you can read about here. She is also a somatic Jungian trauma therapist.
